Uttarakhand Gym Owner Deepak Kumar Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting Trader

In a significant turn of events in Uttarakhand, Deepak Kumar, a gym owner from Dehradun, was apprehended on Thursday following allegations of assaulting a local trader. The incident underscores the heightened tensions in the region, which have been exacerbated by recent communal clashes and political sensitivities.

Deepak Kumar, known for his vocal opposition against the harassment of an elderly Muslim shopkeeper by suspected members of the Bajrang Dal in January, has now found himself on the other side of the law. Reports suggest that Kumar’s troubles began when he posted a comment on social media critiquing the demolition of a section of a mosque by the Ujjain municipal authority as part of a road-widening initiative ahead of the significant Hindu religious event, the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.

The situation escalated when the complainant, Sanjeev Tonk, responded to Kumar’s post. Following this exchange, Kumar allegedly visited Tonk’s shop and assaulted him, resulting in a formal complaint being lodged against him. Sarvesh Panwar, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, confirmed details regarding the incident to The Times of India.

Initially, the First Information Report (FIR) filed against Kumar included charges related to criminal intimidation and intentional insult aimed at provoking a breach of peace, as outlined under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. However, police later augmented the charges to encompass promoting enmity between different groups and voluntarily inflicting hurt, reflecting the seriousness with which they are treating the matter.

In light of the evolving situation, Kotdwar Police acted swiftly and detained Deepak Kumar under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Authorities emphasized that their actions were taken considering the prevailing evidence and the potential for public unrest in the locality. The arrest has sparked discussions on social media about the broader implications of communal tensions and the enforcement of law in politically sensitive environments.
