The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has initiated legal proceedings against 63 social media accounts for allegedly disseminating misleading information regarding waterlogging at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) last week. The action was taken after several posts surfaced on various platforms claiming that the airport was inundated and operations were severely disrupted due to flooding.
On September 4, heavy rainfall resulted in temporary water accumulation at the arrival forecourt of Terminal 3. However, DIAL clarified that the situation was promptly managed, with the accumulated water being cleared within a mere 20 minutes, without any impact on airport operations. The rainfall recorded during the period was approximately 72.2 mm, occurring between 2.30 PM and 5.30 PM. Although the weather conditions were challenging, only eleven flights had to be diverted to alternative destinations.
The airport operator highlighted that some of the online content shared was not only inaccurate but also included old footage of a waterlogged Dubai Airport misrepresented as current footage from Delhi. This kind of misinformation, according to DIAL, aims to create public panic, tarnish the reputation of a crucial public service, and cultivate unnecessary concerns among travelers.
In light of such incidents, DIAL emphasized the importance of responsible social media usage, particularly in times of crisis. They expressed that misleading information could easily lead to confusion and anxiety among passengers who depend on accurate information for their travel plans. The diversion of flights, while regrettable, was a precaution taken in response to the adverse weather conditions.
This legal move reflects the growing trend among public institutions to combat misinformation in the digital age. As social media becomes an increasingly influential platform for news and updates, the responsibility of users to verify information before sharing is more crucial than ever. DIAL’s action serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of spreading false information, especially regarding public safety and operational reliability.
