NIA Files Charges Against Seven Foreign Nationals Linked to Myanmar Armed Groups

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a comprehensive chargesheet against seven foreign nationals who were apprehended in March this year for their alleged connections with ethnic armed organizations in Myanmar that pose a threat to India’s security. The agency, in its legal filing, opted not to invoke the stringent anti-terrorism laws, instead charging the individuals under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the 2025 Immigration and Foreigners Act.

Among those indicted is Matthew Aaron Van Dyke from the United States, along with six Ukrainian citizens: Hurba Petro, Slyviak Taras, Ivan Sukmanovskyi, Stefankiv Marian, Honcharuk Maksim, and Kaminskyi Viktor. The arrests occurred on March 13, when the NIA accused these individuals of engaging in activities that included supplying arms and military equipment to various ethnic groups in Myanmar, as well as providing them with training.

According to the investigation, all seven had initially entered India on valid visas; however, they subsequently traveled to Mizoram without securing the necessary restricted area permits. It has been alleged that during their stay in Mizoram, they met with groups that are considered hostile to India and received drone deliveries from Europe, further complicating the matter. The NIA tracked their movements and arrested them as they attempted to exit India from major cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, and Lucknow.

Special Public Prosecutor Rahul Tyagi, representing the NIA, emphasized the gravity of the charges during the proceedings. The involvement of foreign nationals in activities that could potentially destabilize the region raises significant concerns regarding national security. The agency’s actions reflect a broader commitment to addressing the challenges posed by foreign influences and militant activities along India’s borders.

The case is part of a larger trend where authorities are increasingly scrutinizing foreign nationals and their activities in sensitive border areas.
