Manipur Ethnic Violence: Death Toll Exceeds 300 with Hundreds Displaced

In a troubling update from Manipur, the state government has reported that over 300 individuals have lost their lives and nearly 50 others are unaccounted for since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. This grim statistic was shared during an assembly session on Thursday, as State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam responded to a query regarding the ongoing crisis.

The ethnic strife, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities, has not only resulted in significant fatalities but has also led to large-scale displacement, severely disrupting daily life across the region. According to the data provided by the government, as of August 31, the violence has forced approximately 60,000 residents to flee their homes, with many still living in relief camps.

The situation escalated following allegations against former Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who stepped down amid accusations of partisan handling of the violence. This prompted the imposition of President’s Rule in the state between February 2025 and February 2026. Yumnam Khemchand Singh took over as the new chief minister on February 4, 2023, and described the ethnic clashes as an “unprecedented crisis,” reflecting the gravity of the circumstances faced by residents.

As the violence unfolded, it became clear that a significant number of internally displaced persons had been resettled; however, around 24,000 still remain in temporary relief camps across Manipur. This ongoing crisis has raised concerns not only about the immediate safety of individuals but also about the long-term stability of the region as the government seeks to address the underlying issues fueling the conflict.
