Nepal Flooding Crisis: Death Toll Reaches 691 with Thousands Missing as Rescue Operations Continue

A devastating series of floods and mudslides in Nepal and parts of China has led to a tragic increase in the death toll, which now stands at 691, as reported by AFP on Sunday. According to the disaster management authority of Nepal, as of Saturday, 2,426 individuals were out of touch, a situation that has raised alarm bells among families and authorities alike. The situation is equally dire in Tibet, where 546 individuals are reported missing, and 16 fatalities have been confirmed. Among those affected, there are 517 foreign nationals, including tourists and expatriate workers, who have not been heard from, further complicating rescue efforts.

The catastrophic floods struck the Rasuwa district, located near the northern border with China, on Wednesday, catching residents off guard. Interestingly, there had been no rainfall in the area preceding the disaster, leaving the local population unaware of the imminent danger. The United States Geological Survey has attributed the floods to a glacial collapse that triggered a massive surge of water and debris, devastating the region.

Initial investigations by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development indicate that a significant volume of ice and rock debris entered the Lende Khola, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi river. This influx generated a sudden and powerful surge that overwhelmed the area, leading to the current humanitarian crisis. In light of these findings, experts are raising concerns over the impact of climate change on glacial stability and the increased frequency of such natural disasters in the Himalayas.

As the rescue operations enter their fifth day, the Indian government has confirmed that 287 Indian nationals are among those missing in Nepal. The ongoing search and rescue mission involves local authorities, international agencies, and volunteer groups working tirelessly to locate those unaccounted for. The hope remains that as efforts continue, more individuals will be found safe and sound.
