Mohan Bhagwat Advocates ‘Unity in Diversity’ at New York Event Amid Protests

On August 29, New York’s Madison Square Garden transformed into a hub of cultural celebration as over 5,000 individuals of Indian descent gathered to hear Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This event, titled the “Universal Oneness Celebration,” aimed to promote a message of unity, but outside its walls, the atmosphere was markedly different, highlighting the divide in perceptions about the RSS and its affiliates.

As attendees sported festive attire, saffron caps, and traditional rakhis, they posed for photos against the iconic Madison Square Garden backdrop. A lively atmosphere prevailed, with the sounds of a dhol player performing a contemporary rendition of the national anthem, “Jana Gana Mana,” creating a celebratory mood. Chants of support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed through the crowd, with attendees proudly exclaiming, “We love Modi ji” and “Vande Mataram,” showcasing their allegiance to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideologies.

Conversely, a coalition of protestors gathered outside the venue to express their dissent against Bhagwat’s presence. Groups such as Hindus for Human Rights and the Indian American Muslim Council voiced their concerns regarding the RSS and BJP, asserting that they contribute to an environment of hatred and violence, particularly against religious minorities in India. This sentiment was echoed earlier by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, which called on the Trump administration to reconsider Bhagwat’s visa, reflecting significant worries about human rights and religious freedoms under the current Indian administration.

The demonstrations, despite being organized to draw attention to these urgent issues, seemed largely to go unnoticed by the enthusiastic attendees, many of whom had journeyed from distant locations to participate in the event. This stark contrast between the two groups emphasized deeper divides within the Indian diaspora, highlighting differing views on the implications of the RSS’s ideology and its impact on society.

In his address, Bhagwat emphasized the importance of unity amidst diversity, urging attendees to embrace the idea that different cultures and religions can coexist harmoniously. He framed this message as essential for fostering a peaceful society, attempting to bridge the gap that protests outside highlighted.
