Mamata Banerjee Faces FIR for Alleged Breach of High Court Order During TMC Student Event

The Kolkata Police have initiated a first information report (FIR) against West Bengal’s former Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, following claims that she contravened a Calcutta High Court directive during an event marking the foundation day of the Trinamool Congress’s student wing. The report, filed on Friday, alleges that Banerjee’s supporters obstructed Cathedral Road, causing significant traffic disruptions and extending the scheduled event beyond the allowed timeframe.

According to sources, the High Court had previously authorized both factions of the Trinamool Congress to conduct their respective events. The ruling, made by Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, specifically stipulated that vehicular movement should remain unimpeded on one side of the road. The Mamata Banerjee faction was permitted to hold its gathering on Cathedral Road, while a rival faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee was allocated Rani Rashmoni Avenue for their activities. Each event was supposed to host a maximum of 1,500 attendees and was scheduled between noon and 3 PM on Friday.

The complaint that led to the FIR was lodged by Sub-Inspector Apu Baidya from Hastings Police Station. It accuses Banerjee of allegedly conspiring with members of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad, inciting her supporters to dismantle barricades and engage in confrontations with law enforcement. This incident has raised concerns regarding public safety and adherence to judicial orders.
