Trinamool Congress Leaders Face Legal Action After Confrontation Over Party Signboard

In a significant turn of events, Trinamool Congress leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien have been booked by the Kolkata Police following an incident that escalated into a scuffle over the removal of a party signboard. The confrontation took place on Camac Street, where municipal officials, accompanied by police, were dispatched to take down the sign due to safety concerns.

The signboard, prominently displaying the name “All India Trinamool Congress,” was reportedly hanging precariously from the top of the building, which primarily houses the offices of the party. The police had received directives from the municipal corporation to remove the signboard as it posed a potential hazard to public safety. The situation intensified when Banerjee and O’Brien opposed the action, leading to an altercation with the police.

Authorities have registered three First Information Reports (FIRs) against the two leaders, citing multiple offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These include charges of unlawful assembly, obstructing public servants in the line of duty, assault, criminal intimidation, and the application of force against a female officer, among others. As of now, at least 13 individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, as confirmed by Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kunal Aggarwal.

Witnesses reported that tensions escalated rapidly when the police team arrived at the scene to initiate the removal process. Chaos ensued as Banerjee confronted the officers, arguing against the removal of the signboard, which he claimed was a representation of the party’s identity and presence in the region. The police’s actions were framed as a necessary measure for public safety, yet the leaders viewed it as an unwarranted attack on their party’s visibility.

This incident has sparked a broader debate regarding the relationship between political parties and law enforcement, especially concerning the handling of local governance issues.
