Congress Demands Dismissal of Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Over Controversial Minister Remarks

The Congress party has called on President Droupadi Murmu to take action against the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet, asserting that the state government has obstructed judicial proceedings against Minister Vijay Shah. This plea follows allegations that Shah made derogatory remarks concerning Army spokesperson Colonel Sofiya Qureshi during a public event in 2025.

Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari has submitted a formal letter to the President, claiming that the government’s refusal to grant permission for Shah’s prosecution suggests the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is protecting its members from accountability and hindering justice. Patwari described Shah as a “loudmouth” minister who has been given political cover by the government, a situation that he argues undermines the integrity of the judicial process.

The controversy traces back to May 13, 2025, when Vijay Shah made comments at an event in Mhow, linking the Prime Minister’s actions to those who have suffered tragedies due to conflict. Although he did not mention Colonel Qureshi by name, opposition parties swiftly pointed out that his remarks were likely directed at her, especially given her role as a spokesperson during the media briefings related to Operation Sindoor, which involved sensitive defence matters. Shah’s repeated remarks during the event, as noted by critics, further fueled the accusations of disrespect towards military personnel.

In response to the uproar, the Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter the next day, ordering that a case be registered against Shah. He was subsequently charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly inciting hostility against an individual or group. This development has intensified scrutiny of the BJP’s handling of the situation, raising questions about their commitment to accountability, particularly when it involves high-ranking officials.

The ongoing political dispute highlights the broader tensions between the Congress and BJP in Madhya Pradesh.
