Uttarakhand BJP Leader Justifies Rituals Amid Controversy Over Purification of Kharge Rally Venue

The political landscape in Uttarakhand has been stirred following comments from Mahendra Bhatt, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He defended the controversial “purification” ritual conducted at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani, a venue that recently hosted a rally by Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge. Bhatt’s remarks come in the wake of rising tensions surrounding the event.

During a media interaction in Mussoorie, Bhatt explained that the purification was necessary to address the perceived “pollution” of the venue caused by slogans shouted during the rally. He emphasized that the ritual was not targeted against any particular community, particularly those belonging to Scheduled Castes. “Those who lack genuine issues tend to raise matters that only serve to fracture our society,” he stated, suggesting that the protest was politically motivated rather than a genuine concern.

Kharge had previously brought attention to the purification incident in the Rajya Sabha on August 13, calling for legal action against those responsible for the ritual. In response to the uproar, Union Minister JP Nadda distanced the BJP from such practices, asserting that the party does not endorse these activities and that an investigation into the matter would be launched. However, Bhatt remained steadfast in his stance, stating that the ritual was a necessary response to the nature of the slogans used during the rally, though he refrained from specifying which slogans he found objectionable.

The purification ceremony was reportedly carried out by a group known as Shri Ram Sena, which the Congress party has claimed has ties to the BJP. Nevertheless, the BJP has categorically denied any connection with the group, further complicating the narrative surrounding the event. This controversy highlights the ongoing tensions between the BJP and Congress in a state that has witnessed significant political rivalry.
