Nepal’s Catastrophic Flash Floods Claim 162 Lives, Hundreds Still Missing

In a tragic turn of events, the flash floods and mudslides that struck Nepal on Wednesday have resulted in a rising death toll, now standing at 162. However, the United States Geological Survey has confirmed that no seismic activity was recorded in the vicinity at that time. Eyewitness accounts and video footage reveal alarming details of the situation; water levels in the Trishuli River at Galchchi surged by a staggering nine meters in just half an hour, while levels at Malekhu escalated by seven meters.

ICIMOD’s preliminary assessments suggest that a substantial volume of ice and rock debris may have entered the Lende Khola, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi River, contributing to the flooding. This incident highlights the potential dangers of climate change and environmental degradation in the region, prompting calls for urgent action and better disaster preparedness.

The situation remains dire for the affected communities as search and rescue operations continue. The Nepali government is working tirelessly to locate the missing individuals and provide assistance to those displaced by this catastrophic event.
