Students Mobilize Across India to Highlight Inadequate School Conditions

In a significant wave of activism, students from various schools throughout India have taken to the streets, protesting against the dismal state of their educational institutions. Dubbed the ‘Gen Alpha’ protests, this movement draws inspiration from the earlier protests led by ‘Gen Z’ activists in Delhi, which resonated across the nation.

The protests have seen students demonstrating at school entrances, blocking roads, and even staging sit-ins at the offices of local authorities to voice their grievances. The Cockroach Janata Party, a local political entity, has responded to these demonstrations by launching the ‘School Thik Karo’ (Fix the Schools) campaign. According to the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE Plus), a government database, a staggering 99% of government schools in India reportedly have toilet facilities, while 99.6% claim to provide drinking water.

This discrepancy has raised serious questions regarding the reliability of official data, especially as activists argue that the reality on the ground is far from what is being reported. The UDISE Plus database is meant to provide comprehensive details about each school, including enrollment numbers, teacher-student ratios, and facilities available, but the protests suggest that these figures may not accurately reflect the conditions faced by students.

The Gen Alpha protests highlight a critical gap between governmental claims and the lived experiences of students. As the movement gains traction, it raises important discussions about the need for systemic reform in the Indian education sector.
