Delhi Court Dismisses Sexual Harassment Charges Against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Citing Political Motives

In a significant ruling, a Delhi court acquitted Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India, of sexual harassment allegations brought forth by six women wrestlers. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ashwini Panwar, stated on August 3 that the claims were ‘false and fabricated,’ suggesting they were driven by political motivations rather than genuine grievances.

The court’s decision comes amidst a backdrop of protests by prominent Indian wrestlers, including Olympic medalists Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat, who have accused Singh of intimidation and misconduct. The allegations, which involved demands for sexual favors in exchange for professional assistance, were brought to light in early 2023 and included multiple incidents of alleged harassment. Seven individuals, including a minor, participated as complainants in this case.

During the proceedings, the magistrate pointed out that the timing of the complaints raised questions about their authenticity, as they were lodged long after the alleged incidents occurred. Furthermore, the magistrate noted that the testimonies of the wrestlers seemed rehearsed, suggesting a lack of spontaneity in their accusations. In an unexpected turn, two of the complainants even acknowledged that they had not experienced any harassment from Singh, indicating discrepancies in the case.

The court also highlighted the long-standing cordial relationships some complainants had with Singh, evidenced by various photographs presented as part of the defense.
