In Jharkhand, tensions escalated on Tuesday as several members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) were taken into custody following a confrontation with law enforcement during a march aimed at the state Assembly. This demonstration was a response to the police’s use of lathis and tear gas against students participating in a protest the previous day, which raised concerns over alleged irregularities in a civil services examination.
The protest was further amplified by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has called for a statewide bandh, or strike, slated to take place from 8 AM to midnight on Tuesday. This action comes in solidarity with the students and as a critique of the police’s handling of the situation, reflecting the ongoing political tensions in the state. The ABVP, a student organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), serves as the ideological backbone for the BJP.
Jharkhand’s political landscape is currently dominated by the Mahagathbandhan coalition, which includes Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the Congress party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation. This coalition has faced increasing pressure from the opposition as students continue to voice their grievances over the management of national competitive examinations.
The protests began on July 25, ignited by a broader national movement addressing perceived failures in the examination process. Since then, protesters have been staging sit-ins at Ranchi’s Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, where six demonstrators have been on a hunger strike to draw attention to their cause. On Monday, the situation intensified as thousands of students marched toward the Assembly, demanding accountability and reform in the examination system.
Despite the police’s attempts to thwart the demonstration, which included lathi charges and tear gas deployment, protesters managed to breach multiple barricades, reaching the Assembly’s vicinity. Several demonstrators sustained injuries during the unrest. The assembly was already convened, underscoring the urgency and significance of the students’ demands.
