Violence Erupts in Jharkhand as Police Clash with Protesters Demanding Job Exam Reforms

In a dramatic escalation of tensions in Jharkhand, police clashed with protesters in Ranchi on Tuesday, resulting in several injuries. The demonstrators were marching towards the Assembly as part of their ongoing agitation against perceived irregularities in competitive examinations for government jobs. This marked the 17th consecutive day of their protest, underscoring the mounting frustrations of youth who feel left in limbo over their career aspirations.

The confrontation turned violent when police resorted to lathi-charging and deploying tear gas to disperse the crowd, which has been vocal about the alleged mismanagement in the recruitment process. In response to these developments, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the police’s heavy-handed approach, urging the Jharkhand government to engage with the protesters and address their concerns. The Congress party is part of the ruling Mahagathbandhan alliance in Jharkhand, which is spearheaded by Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

Adding to the political drama, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi and several leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were detained while demonstrating outside CM Soren’s residence. Their protests came just a day after the Jharkhand government agreed to cancel three contentious examinations following negotiations with student delegations. However, the agreement fell short of meeting the students’ primary demand for the cancellation of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) exams.

The situation has been further complicated by the arrest of L Khiangte, former chairperson of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission, by the state’s Criminal Investigation Department. This arrest is connected to allegations surrounding irregularities in the recruitment examinations, fueling public discontent and raising questions about the integrity of the examination process.

Reports have indicated that many young people in Jharkhand spend years preparing for the JPSC exams, only to face setbacks due to alleged misconduct in the selection process. The ongoing protests reflect a growing sense of disenfranchisement among the youth, who are increasingly vocal about their demands for transparency and fairness in recruitment.
