Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre Released on Bail After Alleged Assault in Dombivli Hospital

In a significant development, Ramesh Mhatre, a corporator affiliated with the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, was released from Adharwadi jail in Kalyan on Saturday following the Bombay High Court’s decision to grant him bail. Mhatre’s release comes after he spent over three weeks in custody due to allegations of assaulting medical staff at a civic hospital in Dombivli.

The controversial incident occurred on July 6, when Mhatre and a group of associates allegedly attacked doctors and hospital personnel. The confrontation reportedly erupted after the family of a pregnant woman was advised to transfer her to another medical facility due to a lack of available beds in the neonatal intensive care unit. The newborn was expected to require immediate medical attention, and the hospital’s inability to accommodate the patient’s needs reportedly triggered the assault.

Following his arrest on July 8, Mhatre was initially granted bail by a sessions court just six days later. However, this bail was revoked by the High Court only days after it was granted, leading to his return to jail. Mhatre’s legal troubles took a turn when he surrendered before the court, hoping to expedite his case. The Bombay High Court’s bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad, noted the rapid progress of the investigation and Mhatre’s substantial time spent in incarceration.

While granting bail on Friday, the court imposed a specific condition: Mhatre must remain outside Maharashtra until the chargesheet is filed, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations against him.
