When engaged in resistance training, which encompasses weight lifting and the use of resistance machines, it’s essential to understand the mechanics involved. A repetition, or ‘rep,’ refers to a single complete movement of an exercise, while a set is a collection of reps performed consecutively without significant rest. Training to failure, also identified as momentary muscular failure, entails continuing a set until no additional reps can be executed correctly, despite one’s utmost effort. Conversely, a methodology called ‘repetitions in reserve’ (RIR) advocates for stopping before reaching this point, preserving the ability to perform additional repetitions.
The rationale behind training close to failure primarily lies in the composition of muscle fibers. Muscles consist of various cells known as muscle fibers, which are categorized into type 1 and type 2 fibers, each having distinct characteristics. Type 2 fibers are particularly significant for their ability to generate greater force and hypertrophy, or muscle growth, compared to type 1 fibers. This understanding raises the question: does training to failure effectively target these powerful type 2 fibers, or can a more measured approach suffice?
Typically, a ‘light load’ would be one that allows for more than 15 repetitions, while a ‘heavy load’ is limited to fewer than 10. As fitness experts analyze the implications of various training techniques, it becomes evident that simply reaching fatigue may not necessarily equate to improved strength gains. In fact, overdoing it can lead to excessive fatigue and inadequate recovery, which ultimately stalls progress.
