Uttar Pradesh Cleric Faces Legal Action for Controversial Remarks on Kanwariyas

The Muzaffarnagar district police in Uttar Pradesh have initiated legal proceedings against a prominent Muslim cleric, Sajid Rashidi, for allegedly making disparaging remarks about Hindu devotees known as kanwariyas. Rashidi, who is the president of the All India Imam Association, has come under fire for comments made during an interview, where he questioned the devotion of some kanwariyas following reported incidents of unruly behavior.

In his interview with IANS, Rashidi expressed concerns about individuals participating in the annual Kanwar Yatra—a pilgrimage where kanwariyas travel long distances to collect holy water from the Ganga river in Haridwar to bring back for offerings in their local temples. He specifically criticized those who engage in misconduct, asking, “Can those who sit on roads consuming alcohol and intoxicants be considered true devotees of Lord Shiva?” He further referenced a troubling incident in Meerut, where a group of kanwariyas were filmed assaulting police officers, questioning if such behavior aligns with the spirit of devotion.

While Rashidi clarified that his comments were not intended to generalize all kanwariyas, his words have sparked significant outrage within certain communities. The remarks drew immediate backlash, particularly from members of the Hindutva organization Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, whose chief, Narendra Panwar, lodged a formal complaint against the cleric. The complaint resulted in the police filing a First Information Report (FIR) against Rashidi under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with offenses related to public harmony.

The annual Kanwar Yatra, which began on July 30 and is set to conclude on August 11, sees millions of devotees undertaking arduous journeys, often covering hundreds of kilometers on foot, to participate in this deeply spiritual event. The festival is marked by vibrant processions, chanting, and a display of devotion to Lord Shiva, and has become an essential part of the cultural fabric for many Hindus across India.

As the situation unfolds, the incident raises broader questions about inter-community relations and the responsibilities of public figures in fostering tolerance and understanding. The remarks by Rashidi have highlighted the sensitive nature of religious devotion in India, where expressions of faith can quickly become entangled in controversy.
