Siddaramaiah Steps Back from Electoral Politics, Citing Age and Political Corruption

In a significant announcement, former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared his retirement from electoral politics, emphasizing concerns about corruption and his advancing age. The seasoned Congress leader, who has served as chief minister for over eight years across two separate terms, expressed his intention not to contest the upcoming 2028 Assembly elections.

At an event held in Mandya district on Sunday, the 78-year-old politician highlighted that while he has received encouragement from constituents in his Varuna constituency to run again, he feels compelled to step away from the electoral arena. “I have decided that I should not contest in any elections henceforth,” he stated, reflecting on the changing nature of political dynamics. Siddaramaiah lamented the shift from a scenario where financial support came from the public to a system he perceives as increasingly corrupted.

Siddaramaiah’s political journey has been marked by his tenure as Karnataka’s longest-serving chief minister, notably between 2013 and 2018, and his most recent term starting in May 2023. His leadership ended after a brief period when he stepped down from his position on May 28, 2023, at the behest of the Congress party leadership, paving the way for DK Shivakumar to take the reins on June 3, 2023.

During his time in office, Siddaramaiah has been an influential figure in Karnataka politics, known for his pragmatic approach and welfare initiatives. However, he expressed concerns about the current political environment, stating, “In the past, when I contested elections, it was the people of the constituency who gave us money and ensured our victory. But today, such a situation no longer exists.” With his decision to refrain from future contests, he aims to focus on contributing to the political discourse without being a candidate.
