New SIT Formed to Investigate Alleged Misappropriation of Ram Temple Donations

The Uttar Pradesh government has established a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the alleged misappropriation of funds donated to the Ram temple located in Ayodhya. This decision follows the directives issued by the Supreme Court on July 13, which mandated the formation of a new SIT led by a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer to ensure an impartial inquiry into the matter.

The reconstituted SIT is now under the leadership of Inspector General Kiran S, with Deputy Inspector General Somen Verma and Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover serving as its members. This new panel replaces the previous team, which was chaired by Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, an officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Notably, Kiran S was also part of the prior SIT, which had initially been tasked with investigating the alleged financial irregularities.

The Supreme Court’s ruling came after growing concerns regarding the management of the donations made for the construction of the temple, which is of significant cultural and religious importance to many Hindus across India. The temple trust had called for an inquiry after various opposition leaders and a whistleblower raised alarms about potential fraudulent practices in handling the funds.

On July 20, the court urged the state government to allow the ongoing police investigation to fall under the oversight of the same three-member SIT that had first identified prima facie evidence of the alleged embezzlement. This step has been perceived as crucial not only to ensure transparency but also to restore public trust in the management of the temple’s funds.

The formation of the new SIT highlights the importance of accountability in managing religious donations, especially considering the heightened scrutiny surrounding the temple’s finances. As the investigation unfolds, all eyes will be on the SIT’s findings and the state government’s response to ensure that justice is served and that any misconduct is appropriately addressed.
