Tragic Rise in Assam Flood Casualties: Death Toll Reaches 41 Amid Widespread Devastation

The flood situation in Assam has tragically worsened, with the state disaster management authority reporting that the death toll from flood-related incidents has now reached 41. This alarming increase comes as more than 640,000 residents across over 900 villages in eleven districts grapple with the devastating effects of the floods.

Among the districts severely affected, Sivasagar has emerged as the hardest hit, with approximately 328 villages submerged. The grim statistics include ten additional fatalities between Tuesday and Wednesday alone, with Sivasagar and Jorhat each reporting three deaths, while Charaideo recorded two, and one death was noted in both Dhemaji and Karbi Anglong. Disturbingly, over 100 individuals remain unaccounted for, raising concerns about the ongoing rescue operations.

Rescue efforts have been ramped up as the situation continues to unfold. Several rivers, including the Burhidihing, Dikhou, and Dhansiri, are currently flowing above the danger mark, with the Disang river surpassing its highest recorded flood level. The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, attributed the heavy rainfall to a cloudburst in the upstream states of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, which received precipitation levels significantly above normal—141% and 181% respectively.

This unprecedented discharge of floodwaters has devastated districts that typically experience little to no flooding, highlighting the severity of the current situation.
