Tragedy in Sikkim: Tunnel Blast Claims 25 Lives as Rescue Operations Conclude

The devastating tunnel explosion in Sikkim’s Namchi district has escalated the death toll to 25, following the recovery of three additional bodies on Thursday. This tragic incident marks the end of a four-day extensive search and rescue operation targeting the Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project, which is managed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).

The explosion occurred on Monday when a sudden and violent release of suspected methane gas trapped within the rock formations led to a catastrophic collapse of the tunnel. The incident resulted in a significant release of dense smoke and toxic fumes, creating a perilous situation for workers trapped inside. At the time of the disaster, a total of 27 individuals were inside the tunnel, with only two fortunate enough to escape unharmed, as reported by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.

On Thursday, rescue teams concluded their efforts after recovering the last three bodies and conducting a thorough inspection of the site, confirming that no additional workers were trapped. This exhaustive operation involved various agencies collaborating to locate and assist those affected by the tragedy. The local district authorities reconciled records of the missing individuals and reported that all accounted for were retrieved.

In light of this unfortunate incident, the NHPC has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased. Additionally, Chief Minister Tamang has pledged further support, outlining a compensation package that includes ₹4 lakh for each family who lost a member and ₹50,000 for those injured. Such measures aim to provide some relief to the families grappling with the aftermath of this calamity.
