71-Year-Old Gita Prakash: A Journey from Doctor to Radio Jockey and Model

At 71, Gita Prakash epitomizes the spirit of resilience and adaptability, having seamlessly transitioned through various illustrious roles throughout her life. A devoted mother and a trailblazer in her professional sphere, Gita’s journey began shortly after the birth of her children when she made the decision to return to work, prioritizing both her career and family.

Initially, Gita took on a part-time role at a local school, dedicating just two hours a day to her job. This arrangement allowed her to be present for her children when they returned from kindergarten. As they matured, she expanded her professional commitments, taking on an afternoon role as a visiting general practitioner at two banks, a move aimed at boosting her family’s finances. With her husband, Tarun, frequently travelling for his navy career, Gita understood the importance of contributing to their household income.

Her career further blossomed when she began collaborating with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), dedicating a decade of her life to treating Afghan refugees. In the beginning, Gita worked with a translator, but her passion for her work motivated her to learn Pashto, the language spoken by many of her patients. This linguistic skill proved invaluable as she catered to the specific needs of the women in the refugee community, who often preferred consulting a female doctor familiar with their culture. Her empathetic approach quickly earned her the reputation as a go-to physician among the Afghan refugees.

Upon her transition to Max Super Specialty Hospital in Saket, many of her Afghan patients chose to follow her, establishing a loyal clientele. The other doctors at the hospital would often joke about her popularity, referencing her patients as her ‘baraat’, a playful nod to the traditional wedding procession in India.
