DMK MLA GV Markandayan Arrested Over Alleged Derogatory Remarks Against Tamil Nadu CM Vijay

In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MLA GV Markandayan was arrested on Monday for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Chief Minister Vijay. The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged by Balasubramanian, the North District Secretary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, who accused Markandayan of making inflammatory comments during a public meeting held on Saturday in the Thoothukudi district. The remarks were reportedly deemed offensive and inciting public unrest, leading to Markandayan being charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which encompasses criminal intimidation and intentional insult.

DMK MP Kanimozhi has publicly criticized the state government’s decision to arrest Markandayan, labeling it a heavy-handed approach to political dissent. She has called for the immediate release of the MLA, emphasizing that political leaders should be free to express their views without facing criminal charges. This incident marks a troubling trend as Markandayan is the second DMK legislator to be arrested for similar allegations against the Chief Minister since the onset of the Tamil Nadu government led by Vijay.

Previously, on July 3, former minister and DMK MLA Anitha R Radhakrishnan was also taken into custody for comments made about the Chief Minister that were viewed as derogatory. These arrests underscore a growing climate of political hostility, where scrutiny and backlash against opposition voices seem to be on the rise.
