New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events, noted activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken from the protest site at Jantar Mantar to a hospital on Saturday morning, following a directive from the Delhi High Court. Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike since June 28, was reportedly moved due to concerns over his health, according to the Delhi Police.
However, the situation has sparked controversy as the Cockroach Janta Party, which is spearheading the protests, alleged that Wangchuk had been forcibly detained. The party claimed they were unaware of his whereabouts after his removal from the protest site. Gitanjali Angmo, Wangchuk’s wife, later confirmed via social media that he had been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital for medical attention.
In a further escalation of tensions, Ashutosh Ranka, spokesperson for the Cockroach Janta Party, accused the Delhi Police of blocking roads around Jantar Mantar and using excessive force against protesters. Ranka stated that party founder Abhijeet Dipke was among those who were physically assaulted and detained during the police action. Dipke himself took to social media to recount his experience, alleging that he had been beaten during the incident.
The developments at Jantar Mantar have resulted in chaos, with protesters from the All India Students’ Association vowing to continue their hunger strike in solidarity with Wangchuk. The Cockroach Janta Party has also pledged that their protests will persist, despite the police intervention. The Delhi Police maintain that Wangchuk’s hospitalization was a necessary step, citing expert medical advice concerning his deteriorating health condition.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between activists and law enforcement in India, particularly amidst a backdrop of increasing scrutiny of government actions against dissent. As the situation unfolds, the calls for justice and accountability continue to resonate within the activist community and beyond.
