Supreme Court Greenlights Animated Film ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ Post Rath Yatra

The Supreme Court of India has granted permission for the release of the animated film ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath,’ allowing it to be shown nationwide from July 28, following the conclusion of the revered Jagannath Rath Yatra. This decision came as the apex court reviewed a plea submitted by the film’s producers, who were contesting an interim order from the Orissa High Court that had prohibited the film’s release, which was initially scheduled for July 17.

The High Court had expressed concerns that releasing the film during the Rath Yatra, a significant religious festival, could offend the sentiments of devotees and disrupt public order. However, the Supreme Court acknowledged that the Rath Yatra festivities would conclude on July 27, thus permitting the film’s release soon thereafter. The court also noted that the film had received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification, and highlighted that a television series on the same subject matter was already available on YouTube.

Controversy surrounding the film emerged when the administration of the Jagannath temple in Puri, along with other stakeholders, raised objections to certain depictions included in the film’s teaser. In response to these concerns, the producers had previously arranged screenings of the film for the temple administration, including the Gajapati Maharaja, the ceremonial king of Puri. Reports indicate that the temple authorities requested modifications to several scenes, which the producers were expected to implement.

Despite the request for changes, the film’s producers went ahead with plans to release the film on July 17, without making the adjustments that had been suggested. This led to a further legal challenge, prompting the Orissa High Court to block the film’s initial release. With the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, the film is now set to be released post-Rath Yatra, enabling it to reach audiences nationwide while respecting the sentiments of the devotees during the festival.

This decision underscores the delicate balance between artistic expression and religious sensitivities in India, particularly when it comes to representations of revered deities such as Lord Jagannath.
