The Supreme Court of India has instructed the Rajasthan government to evaluate the medical reports of Asumal Harpalani, commonly known as Asaram Bapu, as he seeks interim bail on health grounds. This development came during a hearing on Friday, where Asaram’s legal representative informed the court about the religious leader’s serious health issues, specifically mentioning an episode of ‘acute internal bleeding.’
During the proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state, countered the health claims by stating that Asaram was fit to travel and had recently visited important pilgrimage sites such as Ayodhya and Varanasi while on parole. However, Mehta committed to obtaining further guidance from relevant authorities regarding Asaram’s current health status. The court has requested a response from the Rajasthan government by Tuesday.
This latest request for bail follows the Supreme Court’s previous decision on June 30, which dismissed Asaram’s plea, underscoring that bail would only be considered under dire medical circumstances, specifically if there was a threat to his life. The case concerns Asaram’s challenge against the Rajasthan High Court’s verdict, which upheld his conviction for the 2013 rape of a minor.
In April 2018, a sessions court in Jodhpur sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment, convicting him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, and juvenile laws. Asaram’s conviction came after a protracted legal battle, which has attracted significant media attention and public interest, highlighting issues surrounding sexual offenses against minors in India. His pending appeal keeps the case in the public eye as it raises larger questions about justice and accountability in the context of influential figures.
The Supreme Court’s actions reflect a careful balancing act between the rights of the accused and the imperative of public safety, raising critical discussions on the treatment of high-profile convicts and their claims for medical relief. The upcoming developments in court are expected to garner widespread attention as they unfold.
