A tragic incident unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district late on Thursday night, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old man, identified as Aarif Hussain from Cheeka village. According to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI), police opened fire after Hussain allegedly launched an attack on a team of security forces deployed in the area.
The incident occurred around 11:30 PM near Bhaderwah, where a police team was stationed along the Jaie-Gandoh road following reports of suspicious activity. When the officers attempted to intercept Hussain, he allegedly attempted to attack them and seize a service rifle. In the ensuing altercation, police personnel from the Special Operations Group (SOG) discharged their weapons, leading to Hussain sustaining severe bullet injuries.
Alongside Hussain, three members of the SOG were also injured during the confrontation. All four individuals were promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, Aarif Hussain succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Initially, his family had been informed that he had been involved in an accident, only to later discover that he had been shot, causing distress among relatives and friends.
The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Reports suggest that a religious preacher has been detained for questioning, although authorities have not yet established any connection between him and the case. Preliminary inquiries have indicated that there is no evidence linking the incident to terrorism, which is a common concern in the region.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions and the complexities of security operations in Jammu and Kashmir, where encounters between police forces and civilians can escalate quickly. Local residents often find themselves caught in the crossfire between state security measures and the socio-political dynamics of the region. As investigations continue, the Doda district remains a focal point for discussions on law enforcement practices in sensitive areas.
