Election Commission Grants Extension for Voter Verification in Delhi, Punjab, Karnataka, and Telangana

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced an extension of the timelines for house-to-house voter verification in four states—Delhi, Punjab, Karnataka, and Telangana. This move is part of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls aimed at ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the voter list ahead of upcoming elections. The adjustments in deadlines reflect the ECI’s commitment to enhancing the electoral process and facilitating greater participation among citizens.

In Delhi, the house-to-house verification process, which commenced on June 30, has now been extended by ten days, moving the new end date to August 8. Originally scheduled for July 29, this extension allows additional time for officials to verify voter information and update old data accurately. Consequently, the draft electoral rolls, which were set to be published on August 5, will now be made available on August 17. Following this, citizens can file claims and objections from August 17 to September 16, with resolutions to be completed by October 15. The finalized electoral rolls will be published on October 19.

Similarly, in Punjab, the verification deadline has been pushed from July 24 to August 3, granting more time for thorough data collection. The draft electoral rolls, initially slated for release on July 31, will now be published on August 13, while the final rolls are expected to be completed by October 12, which is a slight delay from the original schedule.

Karnataka is also affected by the changes, with the verification timeline extended to August 8, a shift from the prior July 29 deadline. The publication of draft electoral rolls has been rescheduled from August 5 to August 17, keeping in line with the overall trend observed across these states. The final electoral rolls are anticipated to be announced on October 19.

Telangana, like the other states, is also undergoing similar adjustments in their electoral roll revision process. By extending these timelines, the Election Commission not only aims to enhance the electoral integrity but also encourages greater public engagement in the voting process. This initiative underscores the importance of accurate voter data, which is crucial for a functioning democracy and the upcoming electoral exercises across the country.
