Tragic Ambush of Church Leaders Highlights Escalating Naga-Kuki Tensions in Manipur

On May 4, a crucial meeting aimed at fostering peace between the Kukis and Nagas took place in Kohima, Nagaland, just three months after violent clashes erupted in Manipur. This gathering brought together church leaders from both communities, including Reverend Vumthang Sitlhou, a respected Baptist pastor from the Kangpopki district. Sitlhou, representing the Kukis, emphasized the deep-rooted connections of Christianity and education that unite the Tangkhul Naga tribe and the Kukis.

During the discussions, the leaders proposed a two-month ceasefire, hoping to pave the way for lasting peace. Vevo Phesao, vice president of the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum, which organized the meeting, recalled the atmosphere of optimism that permeated the session. However, no formal agreement was documented, and the optimism was soon overshadowed by violence. Haominlun Sitlhou, the pastor’s son, revealed that even on the day of the peace talks, gunfire erupted in the nearby hills, indicating the ongoing tensions.

In a tragic turn of events just nine days later, Reverend Sitlhou was ambushed and killed while returning from a meeting of church leaders. He was shot by armed assailants in his vehicle, a shocking act that also claimed the lives of two other church leaders, Reverend Kaigoulun Lhouvum and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou, who were with him at the time. Family members of Sitlhou suspect that this act was a targeted killing, as he had been actively involved in efforts to reconcile the two communities and foster understanding.

This incident underscores the escalating violence in Manipur’s hills, where the longstanding conflict between the Kukis and Nagas has deep historical and cultural roots. With tensions flaring and ceasefires proving elusive, the role of community leaders like Sitlhou in mediating peace is becoming increasingly perilous.
