Supreme Court Demands Update on Investigation into Ram Temple Donation Fraud Allegations

The Supreme Court of India has instructed the Uttar Pradesh government to provide an update on the ongoing investigation into the alleged misappropriation of donations meant for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. This directive was issued on Monday as a part of the court’s efforts to ensure transparency regarding the handling of funds collected for this significant cultural and religious site.

Chief Justice Surya Kant, presiding over a bench that also included Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and A.S. Bopanna, requested a status report from the government, emphasizing the importance of clarity and accountability in this high-profile case. The court also sent a notice to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, the body responsible for managing the temple, in response to petitions calling for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged financial misconduct.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing both the central and state governments, informed the court that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been established to look into the claims of financial irregularities. He confirmed that the investigation is currently in progress and has already resulted in arrests. The SIT, formed on June 13, was organized at the behest of the temple trust following concerns raised by opposition leaders and a whistleblower regarding the management of the temple’s donations.

The Supreme Court bench accepted the Solicitor General’s proposal to submit the status report in a sealed envelope, ensuring sensitive information remains protected. The court has set a deadline for the Uttar Pradesh government to file this report by July 20, and it has requested specifics about the SIT’s composition and its investigative approach. The SIT is expected to present its final findings by July 22, following a preliminary report that highlighted multiple instances of staff hiding large amounts of cash.

This investigation comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over financial governance in religious institutions across India. The Ram temple, which holds immense significance for many Hindus, has been a focal point for both religious sentiment and political discourse.
