Election Commission Introduces New Section in Voter Enrollment Form for Parental Participation

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a significant change to the online version of Form 6, which is used for voter enrollment. According to a report by The Indian Express, this new section specifically inquires if applicants or their parents participated in the last special intensive revision of electoral rolls. This update is currently applicable only to the digital version of Form 6 available on the ECINET portal, while the downloadable statutory version remains unchanged.

Form 6 is crucial for individuals seeking to register as voters, particularly those who have recently turned 18, acquired Indian citizenship, or had their names removed from the electoral rolls. This revision comes at a time when the third phase of the special intensive revision exercise is in progress across 16 states and three Union Territories, with reports indicating that over 5.5 crore names have been expunged from the electoral rolls since the initiative began last year.

Historically, the rules governing electoral forms, including Form 6, have seen little change since the ECI initiated the special intensive revision process back in June 2025. Under Section 28 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, only the Union government holds the authority to amend these rules. Although the new declaration within the online Form 6 is not categorized as mandatory, applicants are required to complete this section to successfully submit their application.

The newly added section presents applicants with three options regarding their or their parents’ involvement in the last revision of the electoral rolls. This move by the Election Commission aims to enhance the accuracy and integrity of the electoral rolls by ensuring that the information provided by voters is comprehensive and up-to-date.

This adjustment in the voter registration process reflects the ECI’s commitment to maintaining a transparent and efficient electoral system, especially as it prepares for upcoming elections. As electoral processes evolve, it remains essential for citizens to stay informed and engage actively in the democratic framework of the country.
