Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has voiced serious concerns regarding alleged attempts by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to destabilize his government. Speaking at a gathering of party members in Hazratbal on Saturday, Abdullah claimed that the BJP is making efforts to entice members of the National Conference (NC) to defect to their side, thereby undermining the integrity of his party.
During the event commemorating the 26th death anniversary of his grandmother Akbar Jehan, Abdullah detailed specific allegations, noting that an MLA from the National Conference informed him of an offer made by the BJP. According to Abdullah, this MLA was approached with a proposal that included a sum of Rs 30 crore and a ministerial position in exchange for switching allegiance. When this initial offer failed to yield results, the MLA was reportedly told that the BJP would support the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir if he were to align with them.
These allegations come in the wake of significant political changes in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, which stripped the region of its special status. The legislative shift resulted in the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Recently, in December 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of this abrogation while also urging the Centre to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had previously indicated that the restoration of statehood would be considered at an appropriate time, a promise that remains under scrutiny by the local populace and political observers alike. Abdullah’s remarks reflect the ongoing tensions and power struggles in the region, particularly as parties navigate the shifting political landscape marked by the BJP’s assertive strategies.
As the political atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir continues to evolve, the National Conference finds itself at a critical juncture. The party, which has a rich history in the region’s politics, is now tasked with maintaining its unity and addressing the challenges posed by rival political forces. The allegations made by Abdullah have sparked discussions about the BJP’s strategies and the implications for the future political framework of Jammu and Kashmir.
