FSSAI Takes Action Against Swiggy Instamart for Delivering Expired and Contaminated Food Products

The Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken a firm stand against Swiggy Instamart, issuing a total of nine notices to the quick commerce platform. This action follows numerous consumer complaints alleging the distribution of expired, spoiled, or contaminated food items. Despite the seriousness of these allegations, the company reportedly failed to address the food safety issues raised by its users.

According to the FSSAI, the complaints highlighted severe violations, including an incident involving an infant food product that was found to be in a “highly deteriorated and unsafe condition”. The agency noted that the product exhibited signs of contamination, improper handling, and inadequate storage. Alarmingly, even after the item was returned, it was allegedly re-delivered to consumers, raising serious concerns about the platform’s commitment to food safety standards.

In addition to the troubling case of the infant food formulation, other complaints indicated that Swiggy Instamart had also delivered contaminated eggs and milk, along with damaged packaged food products. The regulator’s investigation revealed that the company was marketing “Noice Eggs” under a brand name that was not registered with the FSSAI, thereby violating food safety regulations. The FSSAI mandates that all food businesses must possess a valid 14-digit FSSAI license to ensure compliance with food safety norms.

The FSSAI has demanded a comprehensive explanation and compliance report from Swiggy Instamart. The platform has been warned that failure to respond adequately may result in legal action. This situation underscores the growing scrutiny faced by food delivery services in India, where consumer protection and food safety have become paramount in the wake of rising health concerns.
