The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a major warning over the rapidly increasing global cancer burden. According to the Global Cancer Report, if current trends continue, the world could witness around 33.5 million new cancer cases every year by 2050.
At present, approximately 20.6 million people are diagnosed with cancer annually, while nearly 10 million die from the disease each year. Cancer is currently the second leading cause of death worldwide, after cardiovascular diseases.
Among women, breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer. Among men, lip and oral cancers, particularly those linked to tobacco use, are a major concern.
India’s Situation
India is also witnessing a steady rise in cancer cases. Experts attribute the increase to tobacco consumption, air pollution, unhealthy diets, obesity, physical inactivity, and delayed diagnosis.
WHO Recommendations
Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol.
Undergo regular health check-ups.
Participate in breast, cervical, and oral cancer screening programs.
Maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
Take recommended vaccinations such as HPV and Hepatitis B where appropriate.
Health experts emphasize that early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, making awareness and regular screening essential.
