Tragic Wayanad Landslide Claims Five Lives, Search Continues for Missing Individuals

The devastating landslide in Wayanad, Kerala, has claimed the lives of five individuals, as authorities recovered two more bodies from the affected area on Thursday. The landslide occurred in the Kelladi region of Wayanad district and was reportedly triggered by heavy rainfall that caused debris from the excavation of the Wayanad-Kelladi tunnel to cascade down the hillside. This unexpected natural calamity has raised concerns over the safety of such construction activities in vulnerable areas, prompting calls for a thorough review of the practices in place.

On Wednesday, Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan announced that a comprehensive ‘techno-legal study’ will be initiated to ascertain the root causes of the incident. Such investigations aim to prevent similar tragedies in the future and ensure that all safety protocols are strictly followed during construction and excavation projects.

In the aftermath of the landslide, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has been actively engaged in rescue operations. Of the ten individuals reported injured, three have already been discharged from medical facilities. However, four remain hospitalized, with three patients currently in the intensive care unit, including two in critical condition, highlighting the severity of the injuries sustained in the disaster.
