Mumbai Schools and Colleges Shut Down as Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued

In a proactive response to the India Meteorological Department’s orange alert predicting heavy rainfall and strong winds, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a holiday for all government, municipal, and private educational institutions in Mumbai on Tuesday. This decision aims to safeguard the well-being of students amidst threatening weather conditions, with authorities advising residents to limit outdoor activities unless absolutely necessary.

The closure extends beyond Mumbai, affecting schools and colleges in adjoining Thane and Raigad districts, as well as the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area. The directive from Thane district officials highlighted that the continuous heavy rainfall over recent days heightened the risk of waterlogging in low-lying regions, along with the dangers posed by fallen trees and potential traffic disruptions.

As the situation develops, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has issued a caution concerning the Nashik region, where nearly 300 mm of rainfall is expected due to conditions reminiscent of a cloudburst. The Chief Minister identified Nashik and Trimbakeshwar as high-alert zones, urging local residents to remain vigilant. Preparations by district administrations are already in motion in anticipation of significant precipitation.

The recent heavy rains have already caused considerable disruption across the Mumbai-Pune corridor, as transport services have faced challenges. On Monday, a landslide on the ‘Missing Link’ of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway led to significant traffic problems, highlighting the impact of the ongoing adverse weather.
