In the heart of Ranchi, a blind man named Baleshwar Kujur begins his day at the crack of dawn. As the clock strikes five, Kujur, who belongs to the Kurukh community, navigates the streets with remarkable skill. Every morning, he embarks on a thirty-minute trek to St Mary’s Cathedral, a central hub for the local Roman Catholic community.

Upon arriving at his destination, Kujur sets up a foldable plastic stool on a side street, positioning a steel bowl at his feet. Here, he spends the next eight hours collecting alms from the few passersby who patronize his humble presence. “The roads are empty in the mornings, allowing me to walk quickly without fear,” he shares, expressing a sense of freedom in the stillness of dawn. “It feels like I could run in the middle of the streets,” he adds with a chuckle.

However, the return journey in the afternoon presents a stark contrast. On April 29, I met Kujur at his regular spot near the cathedral, where the sun blared down at a scorching 36 degrees Celsius. Shielded by an umbrella, he adjusted his stool and walking cane, ensuring he did not obstruct the busy path frequented by students from adjacent schools and colleges. Once the crowd thinned out, he began the long trek back home, illustrating the daily challenges faced by individuals who are visually impaired.

The plight of the visually impaired in India, particularly in rural areas, remains a pressing issue. Many, like Kujur, navigate their lives with resilience and determination despite the obstacles they face. The support from the community plays a crucial role in their survival, as they often rely on the kindness of strangers.
