The Indian government has taken decisive action by ordering the blocking of seven battery management applications that have been misused to remotely disable e-rickshaw batteries. This directive comes in the wake of alarming incidents where users exploited these applications to stall e-rickshaws on busy roads, raising significant safety and cybersecurity concerns.

Reports from The Indian Express reveal that videos circulated on social media depicted individuals using these apps to wirelessly disconnect the batteries of e-rickshaws via Bluetooth. Such actions not only jeopardize the safety of passengers but also highlight the vulnerabilities associated with these technologies. The applications in question, many of which are developed by Chinese companies, are intended for use by lithium-ion battery owners to monitor various parameters such as charge levels, voltage, temperature, and overall battery health.

In response to these worrying developments, the Union government has instructed major technology firms, including Apple and Google, to remove these applications from their respective app stores. One noteworthy application, BAT-BMS (Battery Management System), allows users to connect to compatible e-rickshaw systems, enabling them to monitor battery statistics and even switch off the power supply remotely, effectively halting the vehicle in motion.

This misuse has led to legal implications, with stranding vehicles on public roads being classified as a punishable offense. An official from The Hindu reported that in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, local police arrested an individual for extorting money from e-rickshaw drivers after immobilizing their vehicles with one of these applications. Such incidents underline the pressing need for regulatory measures to ensure the safe use of technology in public transportation.
