Youth Rally at Jantar Mantar: The Rise of the Cockroach Janta Party

Since June 20, Jantar Mantar has become a hub of youthful activism, fueled by the emergence of the Cockroach Janta Party, a collective of determined young individuals advocating for accountability in the education sector. Among them is 19-year-old Vivek Kumar, who has made the site his home, participating in a continuous sit-in protest aimed at demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Every morning, Kumar begins his day at 6 am, making his way to the nearby Bangla Sahib Gurudwara for personal hygiene before returning to the protest site. He expresses how the Cockroach Janta Party, despite its unconventional name, has fostered a sense of community among its members, stating, “It’s not just a party, but a family. The platform offered by founder Abhijeet Dipke has empowered me to voice my opinions freely, a stark contrast to my previous fears of government repercussions.”

The collective, comprised mainly of students and young professionals, aims to highlight serious grievances related to the government’s handling of medical college entrance examinations and recruitment processes for government jobs. They accuse the Education Minister of mismanagement and failure to create a stable environment for these critical evaluations, which are essential for their future prospects.

As the protest continues day after day, the youthful cohort gathers with placards and chants, demanding justice and change.
