On June 28, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, was honored with a new accolade by Seychelles President Patrick Herminie, who presented him with the title of “Guardian of the Blue Horizon.” As the inaugural recipient of this award, Modi’s recognition raises questions regarding the implications of such foreign honors for India.

The award, approved just three days before the ceremony, came with several noticeable errors. For instance, the term “Republic” was misspelled as “Repubblic,” and the nation’s name, “Seychelles,” was incorrectly rendered as “Seycheeles.” A technology journalist noted that the certificate bore a SynthID signature, hinting that it may have been generated by artificial intelligence rather than crafted through traditional methods. Interestingly, neither the Seychelles government nor India’s Ministry of External Affairs shared the citation on their official platforms, prompting speculation about the significance of this state honor.

Officials from Seychelles later clarified that their existing honors framework had recently become politically divisive, leading to its repeal by the National Assembly. Consequently, the government was compelled to draft a new system in haste, and Modi’s visit served as an appropriate occasion to unveil it. While this explanation might hold some validity, it does not adequately address the numerous errors found on the award or the questionable quality of a certificate presented to a prominent global leader during a significant diplomatic visit.

This situation was not an isolated incident. Earlier in February, Modi received the “Medal of Honor” from Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana during a visit to Israel. The nature of these accolades, while often meant to bolster international ties and enhance India’s image abroad, can occasionally backfire, raising doubts about the authenticity and value of such honors. As India navigates its place on the global stage, the quality and sincerity of these recognitions should reflect the nation’s stature rather than diminish it.

As India celebrates its achievements on the global front, it is crucial to approach these foreign accolades with discernment.
