Indian Government Halts WhatsApp Username Feature Over Security Concerns

The Indian government has called for a halt on WhatsApp’s newly planned username feature, aimed at allowing users to connect without disclosing their phone numbers. According to a report by Hindustan Times on Thursday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) raised alarms regarding potential risks such as impersonation, identity theft, phishing, and online fraud associated with this feature.

WhatsApp’s initiative, announced earlier this week, would enable users to select unique usernames before its official launch, slated for later this year. However, following this announcement, the Ministry issued a notice demanding a pause on the rollout until the government’s apprehensions are adequately addressed. The ministry has requested WhatsApp to submit a detailed explanation of its plans within three days, emphasizing the need for a thorough consultation on the matter.

The government’s concerns stem from the possibility that the new feature may empower malicious actors to reach out to potential victims, thereby exacerbating risks related to digital scams and impersonation. The ministry specifically pointed out that usernames mimicking those of public figures, financial institutions, or government bodies could make it easier for fraudsters to execute their schemes, heightening the threat of identity spoofing.

In response to these concerns, WhatsApp reassured that it has taken steps to mitigate misuse by reserving usernames linked to verified public figures, government organizations, and celebrities. This measure aims to ensure that only legitimate owners can claim these usernames, thus safeguarding against impersonation attempts.
