Escalating Violence in Manipur: 29 Homes Torched Amid Tensions Along Myanmar Border

In a troubling escalation of violence, at least 29 homes were set ablaze in various incidents involving Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities in Manipur, near the India-Myanmar border, on Wednesday. According to officials from the Assam Rifles, the incidents highlight the ongoing strife in the region, which has been plagued by ethnic tensions.

Reports indicate that unidentified individuals targeted a Kuki village, Phaimol, in Kamjong district around 12:30 PM, setting fire to all 15 homes there. The village had previously been evacuated due to security threats, and its residents are currently taking refuge in Aishi village, where an Assam Rifles camp is situated. The swift destruction of homes has raised alarms about the safety of the residents and the overall security situation in the area.

Just over an hour later, at approximately 1:45 PM, armed assailants reportedly struck Shangkhalok, a Tangkhul Naga village, also in Kamjong district. This attack appears to be a retaliatory response to the earlier incident, according to local officials. Fortunately, although seven houses were partially damaged, they were saved from complete destruction.

In a related incident, additional violence was reported in Huimine Thana, another Tangkhul Naga village located between Shangkhalok and Phaikoh. Here, around seven houses were also set on fire, with allegations pointing towards Kuki militants as the perpetrators. Thankfully, no casualties or injuries were reported from any of these incidents, as confirmed by police sources.

The violence did not end there; a further attack was recorded on Thursday morning in the Kuki village of Liekot in Noney district. The apex Kuki body, Kuki Inpi Manipur, alleged that Naga militants launched an attack around 5 AM, utilizing automatic weapons before setting fire to the village. This series of attacks underscores the fragile situation in Manipur, where communal tensions have erupted into violence, leading to significant fears for the safety of local communities.

The clashes in Manipur come against a broader backdrop of ethnic conflicts in the region, fueled by longstanding grievances and competition for resources. As the situation continues to develop, authorities are under pressure to restore peace and ensure the safety of all residents, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds.
