Venezuela is reeling from the devastating impact of two significant earthquakes that have left a grim toll of 1,943 lives claimed, according to the government’s latest report. The seismic events, which struck on June 24, measured magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, creating widespread destruction across the nation and affecting more than 15,800 individuals.

In addition to the casualty figures, over 10,500 people have sustained injuries, adding to the already dire humanitarian crisis. The National Assembly President, Jorge Rodríguez, expressed concerns that approximately 50,000 people remain unaccounted for, a figure described by the United Nations as “terrifyingly plausible.” This alarming statistic highlights the scale of the disaster and the urgent need for rescue efforts.

Filmed accounts circulating on social media depict scenes of devastation, showcasing collapsed buildings and severe damage at the capital’s Maiquetia airport. The La Guaira region, located near Caracas, has been identified as one of the most severely impacted areas. The earthquakes struck in rapid succession, with the initial quake occurring at 6 PM local time at a depth of nearly 22 kilometers followed closely by a second tremor just a minute later, originating from a depth of 10 kilometers. Such shallow earthquakes typically result in more considerable damage, and in this instance, they have been deemed the most powerful to hit the region in over a century. Reports indicate that numerous aftershocks have followed, contributing to the ongoing panic and devastation.
