Opposition Parties Express Alarm Over Electoral Roll Revisions in Letter to Chief Justice

In a significant political maneuver, 23 opposition parties have united to express their apprehensions regarding the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. This collective concern was conveyed in a letter addressed to Chief Justice Surya Kant, as confirmed by Congress officials on Tuesday.

The precise details of the correspondence remain undisclosed; however, Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose revealed to ANI that the opposition coalition has called upon the judiciary to scrutinize the alleged manipulation of this electoral process by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Furthermore, the letter criticizes what the opposition describes as a “biased” operation by the Election Commission of India.

This unified stance emerged following a meeting of the INDIA bloc on June 8, where the decision to approach the Chief Justice was made. Notably, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which were absent from the opposition alliance meeting, have also endorsed the letter, as indicated by TMC MP Derek O’Brien. An Independent MP has also joined the ranks of signatories.

During a post-meeting statement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge articulated the opposition’s intent to alert the Chief Justice about the ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls overseen by the Election Commission. He characterized this exercise as not only a threat to democratic integrity but also a potential avenue for “vote loot” and the “stealing of elections.” The assertion has been a longstanding narrative among opposition parties, who allege a collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission designed to engineer favorable electoral results.
