Opposition Scrutinizes Union Minister Over Controversial Rs 99 Lakh Farming Subsidy

On Saturday, opposition leaders raised serious concerns regarding Union Minister of State Bhagirath Choudhary, following reports that he received a substantial subsidy of Rs 99.6 lakh for a commercial farming project through a scheme overseen by his own ministry. The minister, who serves as the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, reportedly benefited from a program aimed at promoting large-scale commercial farming under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture.

This initiative, managed by the National Horticulture Board, is designed to support projects that enhance horticultural production across the country. Choudhary’s project, which focuses on cultivating cucumbers over an area of 16,592 square meters, was among 467 projects approved by the National Horticulture Board in 2025. The subsidy scheme offers financial support of up to 50%, with a maximum limit of Rs 1 crore per family.

Critics have pointed out the potential conflict of interest arising from Choudhary’s involvement in the ministry that oversees the subsidy he accessed. While it is stated that the Union Agriculture Minister acts as the ex-officio president and Choudhary as the vice-president of the National Horticulture Board, they do not have direct authority over project approvals. Such decisions are made by a project approval committee that operates independently of the board’s leadership.

The controversy has prompted prominent opposition figures, including Congress leader Pawan Khera, to label the situation as a blatant misuse of power. Khera criticized Choudhary for taking advantage of his position to secure funding for his own agricultural ventures, calling it a ‘clear case of conflict of interest.’ He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the allocation of government subsidies, particularly in sectors that significantly impact farmers and the agricultural landscape.

This incident raises broader questions about governance and ethical practices within the Indian political system. As allegations of favoritism and misuse of authority surface, it highlights the need for stringent regulations regarding how public funds are utilized, especially in programs intended to support farmers and boost agricultural productivity.
