Ammonia Leak at Tamil Nadu Seafood Factory Claims 15 Lives, Scores Hospitalized

A tragic incident unfolded in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district when an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export unit near Periyapalayam claimed the lives of 15 individuals. The leak, which occurred on Sunday, has prompted urgent medical responses as a total of 83 people have been reported affected, according to the state’s health and family welfare department.

The incident took place during normal operational activities at a shrimp processing facility located in the Kannigaipair-Manjangaranai area. Workers were unexpectedly exposed to ammonia gas, leading to severe health implications. Symptoms among the affected include breathlessness, eye irritation, coughing, chest discomfort, and distress in the respiratory system. Local health authorities have been working diligently to provide assistance and treatment to those impacted.

Out of the 83 affected individuals, 40 are currently receiving treatment and closely monitored in medical facilities. The majority of those hospitalized are women, predominantly migrant workers from states such as Odisha, Assam, and Jharkhand. Among those in critical condition, two patients are on ventilator support, while nine others require oxygen through nasal assistance. Thankfully, the remaining 29 individuals are reportedly stable.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of industrial workers, especially in the seafood processing sector, which employs many migrant laborers under precarious conditions. The tragic loss of life has raised concerns about workplace safety standards and the health risks associated with exposure to hazardous materials. The state government is under pressure to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the leak and to implement safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
