The West Bengal Police have initiated an investigation into three bank accounts associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) amidst serious allegations raised by rebel MLA Biswanath Das. According to reports, the police have taken the precautionary step of freezing withdrawals from these accounts as they delve into the financial activities linked to the party.
The probe is based on sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that address organized crime, cheating, and criminal conspiracy, in addition to provisions from the Information Technology Act. This development follows Das’s formal complaint, which suggests that funds deposited into the TMC accounts may originate from illicit activities.
In his complaint, Das expressed concerns over the source of the funds, claiming that the party’s financial dealings warrant a thorough investigation. This turmoil within the party’s financial administration has intensified following a troubling incident reported by The Indian Express. On June 12, former state minister Aroop Biswas, identifying himself as the party’s treasurer, instructed HDFC Bank to freeze the TMC’s accounts, citing uncertainties regarding the party’s structure and control over its assets.
However, the situation surrounding Biswas is complicated. Sources within the TMC revealed to NDTV that his position as treasurer was terminated on June 5, shortly after he lost the Tollygunj constituency to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Assembly elections. This internal conflict raises questions about the legitimacy of Biswas’s authority to take such actions regarding the party’s financial assets.
The ongoing turmoil reflects broader issues within the TMC as it navigates a challenging political landscape post-elections. The party, once dominant in West Bengal, has recently faced setbacks, and the investigation into its financial activities could further complicate its position. As the police probe unfolds, all eyes will be on the findings, which could have significant implications for the party’s future and its leadership.
