Tragedy Strikes Vizag Steel Plant: Workers Speak Out on Safety and Production Pressures

On June 8, a catastrophic incident unfolded at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited steel plant in Visakhapatnam, claiming the lives of nine workers and raising serious concerns about workplace safety and production pressures. The accident occurred while K. Pydiraju, a contract worker, was managing a reservoir designed to collect molten steel in the plant’s Steel Melt Shop-1. Suddenly, a ladle filled with molten steel, heated to a perilous 1,600 degrees Celsius, exploded overhead, resulting in a devastating fire.

The explosion unleashed torrents of molten steel, igniting an inferno that immediately engulfed the shop floor. Eyewitness accounts describe a horrifying scene, with eight workers killed on the spot. Disturbing videos circulated online depict the aftermath, showing charred bodies tragically consumed by flames. Pydiraju, who was positioned at a safer distance, sustained severe injuries and was among those rushed for medical attention.

A fellow worker, KM Srinivas, recounted the harrowing rescue of Pydiraju, who suffered over 90% burns. Despite his critical condition, Pydiraju’s words in an ambulance—urging his children to focus on their studies—resonated deeply, highlighting the human element amid the tragedy. Initially treated at the plant’s general hospital, Pydiraju was later referred to a specialized facility in the city due to the lack of a dedicated burn unit at the site. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on June 10.
