With the new government taking charge in West Bengal, several decisions are reportedly being initiated. One of the major decisions is the proposed installation of smart meters across different parts of the state from next month.
However, this move has created a sense of concern and uncertainty among many people. A major question being raised is whether these smart meters will increase electricity expenses compared to the existing system, and whether consumers will have to pay significantly higher bills.
Reports and discussions circulating on social media about smart meters allegedly causing higher electricity bills have further intensified public anxiety. The smart meter system is generally linked with prepaid electricity usage, where consumers recharge their accounts in advance and electricity consumption continues based on the available balance.
Many people are now questioning whether this system will actually be affordable for ordinary consumers, whether the charges will increase, and whether the overall electricity cost will rise. This has created widespread apprehension among residents across West Bengal.
Meanwhile, there have also been discussions about other states’ decisions regarding smart meter projects. In Tamil Nadu, a smart meter tender was cancelled after concerns including the cost quoted by the bidder, while other states have also faced public debates over prepaid smart meter implementation.
The key concern among consumers remains whether smart meters will bring greater transparency and efficiency or become an additional financial burden on ordinary households.
